Minutes before the show is to start sixteen members of the Maison Margiela staff, wearing white work coats and carrying one of many varying beaded string door curtains, leave the backstage accompanied by one of eighteen African drummers and move to one of the ‘salons’. They hang a beaded curtain at the entrance of each ‘U’. It will act as a virtual door to the ‘salon’. The plastic is rolled back at all ‘salons’ to reveal a black carpet. The room falls into darkness, the sound of the African drums fills the space. Twenty-five women wearing the collection leave the backstage; each is chaperoned by a member of staff in a white work coat who will guide them through the darkness.
